About V R Raviram

Born in Chennai in 1973, V. R. Raviram is a distinguished sculptor whose practice is rooted in the transformative possibilities of copper and brass. Working primarily with welded sheet metal, he creates intricately crafted sculptures that draw upon mythology, spirituality, and the enduring visual traditions of India. Trained under the guidance of his uncle, the celebrated sculptor P. V. Janakiram, Raviram developed an early fascination with metalwork, eventually forging a distinct artistic language of his own over more than three decades of practice.

Raviram’s sculptures are marked by their meticulous craftsmanship, richly textured surfaces, and striking relief forms that often evoke deities, animals, birds, and archetypal figures. Balancing tradition with contemporary sensibilities, he transforms rigid sheets of metal into fluid, expressive forms that possess both monumentality and intimacy.

His works are less concerned with narrative than with emotion, inviting contemplation through their rhythmic compositions and meditative presence. Based at the renowned Cholamandal Artists’ Village in Chennai, Raviram continues to create sculptures that honour India’s artistic heritage while exploring the timeless relationship between material, memory, and spiritual expression.
