Jagannath Paul
Jagannath Paul was born and brought up in West Bengal. He graduated from Government College of Art and Crafts, Kolkata in 2001 at the top of his class.
His art is deeply influenced by cubism of the post modern era. Solid blocks of bright colours; red, yellow, and orange is the signature style of Jagannath. Then the deep dark lines of charcoal, start structuring the figurative forms of men and women in his paintings. Thus adding a touch of drama, similar to how kohl adds structure and drama and enhances the beauty of a woman’s eyes. His subjects mostly have straight, long noses, plump lips and big yet closed eyes, perhaps he is illustrating that though beautiful, his subjects are also very thoughtful. The shadowy effect of the charcoal also adds a depth to the painting. Set on a geometric, cubist background, at one time, the artist smudges the charcoal and blends the subjects and the backdrop.
Over the years Jagannath has participated in numerous shows and has earned many awards for his stunning art. Hindustan Pencil Ltd Award, from the prestigious Bombay Art Society, Govern-ment Awards, Camlin Award, Mumbai, College Award from Government College of Arts and Craft, Kolkata, Academy Award From Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata, Gopen Roy Award From Indian Society of Oriental Arts, Kolkata and College Awards For Best Pencil Study, Government College of Arts and Craft, Kolkata are some of his many accolades.
