About Kamal Koria
Kamal Koria was born in the small town of Mangrol, Gujarat in western India and his childhood was spent in a close-knit family, and amongst street life with friends causing mischief and enjoying considerable freedom.
Kamal graduated from C.N. College of Fine Arts, Ahmedabad in 1977 and moved to the UK to pursue a career in graphic design. While designing cards, wedding invitations and album covers to pay the bills, Kamal always spent his spare time sketching scenes from his childhood. Now in his retirement, those sketches have taken centre stage and serve as a means of reminiscing the good old days in his hometown in India.
His work is strikingly composed, bursting with life, and often stylized, rich with the colours of an Indian childhood. Inspired by the vibrant Kathiawadi culture, his work often depicts the women and children from his village which poetically captures both a timeless simplicity of human nature and the nostalgia of his childhood memories.
