About Basuki Dasgupta

Basuki Dasgupta, a contemporary Indian artist whose work is deeply rooted in emotion, memory and textures. A graduate of Santiniketan-Visva Bharati, he now teaches as visiting faculty at the National Institute of Design, Gandhinagar. Raised in Bishnupur, West Bengal, he was drawn to texture from a young age, inspired by the terracotta temples of his hometown. His paintings, created with hardboard, paper pulp, and thick acrylic, offer richly layered surfaces that reflect a deeply physical connection to his art.

Much of his work honors the women in his life, portraying their quiet strength and deep relationships. Often adorned with bindis and jhumkas, these figures embody a beautiful duality, rooted in tradition yet strikingly contemporary.

Nature and mythology also shape his abstract work, with motifs inspired by ocean waves, sun imagery, and the symbolic wheel of the Konark Sun Temple.
