Maqbool Fida Husain, from Maharastra, was a well-known artist of the 20th century; known for his vibrant paintings. A founding member of Bombay’s Progressive Artists’ Group, he has painted in modernist and Cubist styles; covering a range of thematic materials, from the partition in the 1940s to freedom fighters. He even engaged himself with painting figurative art of daily urban life. He has won numerous esteemed awards, including the Padma Shri in 1966, the Padma Bhushan in 1973 and the Padma Vibhushan in 1991. His distinctive styles got him the applause of many, and today his works are displayed in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Modern Art in Mumbai, and the National Museum of Islamic Art in Doha among others.
