Born in West Bengal, Jagannath Paul has been the recipient of numerous prestigious awards including the Hindustan Pencil Ltd. Award by the Bombay Art Society, the Gopen Roy Award from the Indian Society of Oriental Arts, and more. His charcoal paintings usually depict the faces of a man and a woman. Paul says he was inspired by post-modern Cuban art, bringing to life the dramatic moods and emotions in the depicted relationship. Straight lines, geometry, shadows and other features have an accumulative impact in helping the audience decipher the various nuances and ambiguity of such a relationship.
