Subramanian Gopalsamy

Subramanian Gopalsamy believes that loss leads to new beginnings in life and only after suffering through immense personal tragedy of loosing his daughter, has Golpalsamy  found his. In his most trying times, when his reverie was broken, he won a gold medal in an art competition, which eventually led him to his current profession. It was however a tête-à-tête with Michelangelo’s master piece at Sistine Chapel which finally opened his life to a new path and meaning.

For Gopalsamy, images of gods, goddesses, parrots, flowers come naturally to him. The mythological images of Buddha, Ganesha, Krishna and Saraswati reminds him of a happier time from his childhood, of growing up in a coastal village, listening to mythological stories narrated by elders. His inspiration and spark, in his own words, “is the smile of my daughter. My daughter loved birds and the parrot was her favourite, so all my paintings will depict one.”  To him textures are important, they help him connect with the viewers. The onlookers not only understands the emotions behind the canvas but is also compelled to feel it.
