Murli Nagapuzha

Murali Nagapuzha, son of a traditional bell metal worker, from Muvattupuzha, Kerala is a self taught artist. He rose to fame when critics compared his style of celebration of nature, with that of the French master Henri Rousseau. Nagapuzha’s work can be best described as part memory and part nostalgia. Part, a deep abiding love for the wonder of the everyday and his surroundings. His artistic motifs are drawn from a widely published tourist destination of ‘God’s Own Country’ – Kerala. And yet, without being banal or kitschy, Nagapuzha’s artistic terrain marvels at the Kerala contours and colours and makes it his own. It enchants and cuts off all escape routes, making it impossible for us to turn away from his mindscape.

He has participated in dozens of group and solo shows all over the world. Some of his accolades include 2014 Senior Fellowship from Ministry of Culture, New Delhi and 2010 Jackson Pollock Krasner Grant. His works form part of eminent collections like Reliance, Indian Embassies of Doha and Muscat and have also been featured in auctions and books covers for Penguin, Harper and Collins and DC Books.
